Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has pledged to implement inclusive governance and reconciliation as he resumes office following the lifting of the six-month emergency rule imposed by President Bola Tinubu. The emergency rule was declared on March 18 due to intense political crises that threatened peace, governance, and stability in the state.
In a statewide broadcast, Governor Fubara described the period as challenging but necessary to restore order and safeguard democratic institutions. He chose to cooperate with President Tinubu and the National Assembly, prioritizing peace above personal or political gain. The governor resisted pressure to challenge the constitutionality of the emergency declaration and suspension of democratic structures.
After President Tinubu brokered peace among contending parties, Governor Fubara, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, and the Rivers State House of Assembly agreed to put aside their differences. The governor noted that reconciliation was in the best interest of the people of Rivers State and would facilitate progress. He emphasized that the responsibility now rests on the government, state assembly, political leaders, and stakeholders to serve the common good of the people.
Governor Fubara expressed optimism that peace and reconciliation would be permanent, citing the importance of collective responsibility and commitment to unity. He acknowledged concerns about the peace process but assured residents that inclusiveness would remain a priority. Despite the political turbulence, the governor’s administration has achieved significant milestones in infrastructure, education, health, and other sectors over the last two years.
The governor pledged to focus on completing ongoing projects, reviving the state’s economy, protecting lives and property, and improving the welfare of the people. He thanked the people for their resilience and patience during the emergency period and called on all citizens to unite in rebuilding the state. Governor Fubara also expressed gratitude to President Tinubu, Minister Wike, and other stakeholders for their role in restoring peace, urging citizens to work together towards a stronger, more prosperous, and peaceful state.
The lifting of the emergency rule and the governor’s pledge for inclusive governance and reconciliation mark a significant step towards restoring stability and promoting development in Rivers State. As the state moves forward, the focus will be on completing ongoing projects, improving the economy, and enhancing the welfare of the people. The governor’s commitment to reconciliation and inclusive governance is expected to facilitate a fresh beginning for the state, with all stakeholders working together to achieve a brighter future.
