The Kebbi State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has threatened to take disciplinary action against members allegedly working to undermine its upcoming congresses. The party’s congresses are scheduled to take place on September 20 and 27.
According to the party’s Legal Adviser in the state, Mr Nura Bello, a Disciplinary Committee has been constituted at the national level to handle cases of anti-party activities or sabotage. Bello made this announcement on Friday in Birnin Kebbi while addressing journalists. He stated that the committee will deal with any member found engaging in such activities.
Bello also addressed concerns about a court order that circulated on social media on September 18. The order reportedly directed the suspension of congresses in Kano and Kebbi States. However, Bello explained that the party quickly sought legal counsel to vacate the order, which was subsequently granted. He expressed disappointment that the plaintiffs who initiated the court action were PDP members in the state. Bello noted that such jurisdictional matters should have been handled at the state High Court rather than being escalated.
The development comes as the PDP prepares for its congresses, which are crucial for the party’s internal democratic process. The party’s ability to conduct these congresses smoothly is seen as essential for its overall stability and cohesion. With the Disciplinary Committee in place, the PDP is taking steps to ensure that its members adhere to the party’s code of conduct and do not engage in activities that could undermine its progress.
The Kebbi State PDP’s decision to take disciplinary action against erring members is a significant step towards maintaining party discipline and unity. As the party moves forward with its congresses, it remains to be seen how the Disciplinary Committee will handle cases of anti-party activities or sabotage. The outcome of these congresses will likely have implications for the party’s future direction and its ability to present a united front in upcoming elections.
