NULGE Lagos Demands Suspension of President Over EFCC Probe

NULGE Lagos Members Demand Suspension of State President Amid EFCC Probe

A faction of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) Lagos State Chapter has formally requested the union’s national leadership to suspend its State President, Comrade Sunday Sewanu Ogunfowora, during an ongoing Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) investigation.

In a letter dated February 19, 2026, and addressed to the NULGE President General in Abuja, the concerned members cited Rule 27(ii) of the union’s constitution. This rule mandates the suspension of any officer under investigation for financial misconduct. The group stated that Ogunfowora has been subject to EFCC scrutiny since December 2025 over allegations of misappropriation, diversion of union funds, and money laundering.

The members asserted that the national body had already been informed of the investigation. They argued that the constitutional provision makes suspension compulsory during any inquiry. Rule 27(ii) specifies that an officer accused of embezzling or misusing union funds “shall be suspended during interrogation,” with the National Executive Council (NEC) holding authority for expulsion or removal if guilt is proven.

The letter expressed concern that Ogunfowora remains in office despite the serious allegations, which the members claimed undermines union discipline, accountability, and public trust. They highlighted a precedent, noting that Ogunfowora previously invoked Rule 27(ii) to suspend other officers, such as the Yaba LCDA Branch Chairman, in separate cases. The members contended that not applying the same rule to him constitutes selective enforcement and sets a dangerous precedent.

The group demanded Ogunfowora’s immediate suspension pending the EFCC’s conclusion. They gave the national leadership seven days from receipt of the letter to comply, warning that failure would compel them to seek legal enforcement of the union’s constitution. Copies of the letter were also sent to the Lagos State Command of the Department of State Services (DSS) for awareness.

The members framed their action as necessary for transparency, accountability, and the long-term stability of NULGE, emphasising that constitutional adherence must be uniform for all officers.
