Plateau State Governor Simon Lalong has faced a significant setback following the recent elections, where he was the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the Plateau South Senatorial District. As he approaches the end of his second term in office in May, Lalong lost his senatorial bid to Napoleon Bali, the candidate from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Bali, a retired military officer, secured 148,844 votes, while Lalong garnered only 91,674 votes.
The Publicity Secretary of the Plateau APC, Sylvanus Namang, expressed strong disapproval of the electorate’s decision, labeling Lalong’s defeat as one of the greatest mistakes made by the people in recent history. In an interview in Jos on Wednesday, Namang stated, “I think the people of Plateau South made the greatest mistake during last Saturday’s election when they failed to ensure that the state governor was elected to the Senate. That decision, I’m sure, they will regret.”
Namang further emphasized that had Lalong been elected to the National Assembly, he could have potentially become the Senate Leader of the 10th Assembly, given his experience as a high-ranking legislator. He criticized the electorate for allowing sentiment to influence their voting choices. Despite this disappointment, Namang acknowledged the success of Lalong’s efforts as the Director General of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, which contributed to the election of Bola Ahmed Tinubu as president.
