The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs has warned political leaders and actors against making provocative and unguarded statements capable of dragging the country into unnecessary conflict and anarchy.
According to the council, while reckless statements from inconsequential individuals could be easily ignored, such could not be the case concerning utterances from political and religious leaders.
The NSCIA said this in a statement signed by the Deputy Secretary General, Prof. Salisu Shehu, and the Director of Administration, Zubairu Usman-Ugwu, made available to newsmen on Wednesday.
The statement read in part, βIt is important that patriotic and well-meaning Nigerian leaders should support unrelenting adherence to process and procedure in the ongoing electoral process. This is because any inclination to unprocedural decision or action at this critical time is a direct call for anarchy which will not yield any positive outcome to the nation.β
Meanwhile, the NSCIA urged the Independent National Electoral Commission to remain undistracted and committed to its duty and bring it to a logical conclusion.
βAll Nigerians, particularly Muslims, are urged to, no matter the level of provocation from certain quarters, remain calm and prayerful. May Almighty Allah keep our country stable and peaceful,β the statement added.
