The Tor Tiv, Professor James Ayatse, has given traditional rulers in Konshisha and Gwer East Local Government Areas a two‑day ultimatum to act against the militias and hired killers fueling the Ugambe‑Mbaiase crisis. Speaking from his palace in Gboko, Ayatse warned village heads that sheltering armed mercenaries only intensifies violence and deepens insecurity.
Community leaders say the conflict stems from long‑standing land disputes between the Ugambe and Mbaiase communities. The Tor Tiv called for a return to traditional Tiv values of peaceful coexistence and directed the Mue Ter of Shangev Tiev and Masev districts to expel all armed groups from the area immediately. He also appealed to the Benue State Government to expedite the demarcation of the Ugambe‑Mbaiase boundary, describing it as essential for lasting peace.
Local government chairmen and traditional chiefs present at the meeting voiced their support for Ayatse’s intervention and pledged to enforce his directive to end the crisis. The Ugambe‑Mbaiase conflict has been a source of concern for both the Benue State Government and the Tiv people, with reports of ongoing violence and instability.
Ayatse’s call for a revival of traditional values underscores the importance of community‑led initiatives in conflict resolution. The involvement of local leaders and the state government will be crucial in addressing the underlying causes and achieving a sustainable solution. As the situation evolves, the Benue State Government is expected to take concrete steps to support the Tor Tiv and traditional rulers in restoring peace to the region.
