A coalition of opposition groups in Nigeria has urged former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi to form an alliance to improve their chances in the 2027 presidential election. The coalition, which includes the Save Democracy Mega Alliance and the Civil Societies Alliance, warned that failure to unite could enable President Bola Tinubu to secure a second term. The appeal was made at a gathering in Abuja, where Tony Akeni, the South‑South coordinator of the Save Democracy Mega Alliance, stressed the importance of unity among opposition parties.
Akeni said the meeting concluded that Atiku and Obi must work together if they hope to make an impact in 2027. He noted that Nigeria is fortunate to have two qualified opposition leaders, but their prospects are weakened by the prospect of running on separate party platforms. According to Akeni, research shows the current administration is taking measures to prevent either Atiku or Obi from winning, but these obstacles could be overcome if the two leaders form an alliance. He warned that a split would be a “fatal, historically regrettable and irredeemable mistake” that would ultimately benefit President Tinubu.
The call for unity comes as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 presidential election, seen as a crucial opportunity to transition to new leadership and address the country’s challenges. With the incumbent administration taking steps to consolidate power, opposition groups believe a united front is necessary to challenge Tinubu’s bid for re‑election. The election’s outcome will have significant implications for Nigeria’s future, which faces economic instability, insecurity and corruption. A united opposition could offer a credible alternative and a chance for the nation to move in a new direction. As the election approaches, the decision by Atiku and Obi to ally or run separately will be closely watched and will significantly affect the election’s result.
