The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has reacted to the Presidency’s claim that President Bola Tinubu does not intend to extend his tenure beyond 2031. In a statement, the ADC called the remarks “presumptuous and undemocratic,” noting that Tinubu’s mandate is set to end in 2027. The party warned that Nigerians are unlikely to support any extension of the President’s term given the country’s current condition.
The ADC highlighted the deteriorating security situation and the economic crisis as key concerns. It blamed the All Progressives Congress‑led government for widespread poverty, with many Nigerians struggling to make ends meet. Terrorists, bandits and criminals, the party said, operate with impunity; kidnappings occur in broad daylight and rural communities have become war zones.
Economically, the ADC argued that the government’s handling of the economy has been disastrous. The naira has collapsed, inflation is out of control, and food prices have tripled in many parts of the country. Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC’s National Publicity Secretary, issued the statement on Tuesday, emphasizing the party’s confidence that Nigerians will reject any attempt to extend Tinubu’s tenure.
The statement comes amid growing concerns over Nigeria’s security and economic challenges and is likely to intensify the debate about the nation’s future direction. As the country continues to grapple with these issues, the ADC’s comments will be closely watched by both Nigerians and international observers.
