Malawi’s President Arthur Peter Mutharika and the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) have received a mandate from the people following the September 16 elections. This mandate is not a reward for past performance but a conditional trust placed in their hands. Voting patterns show that Malawians are seeking change and alternatives to failed governance, and the DPP’s victory offers an opportunity to transform and deliver a different kind of leadership—one that is transparent, disciplined, and genuinely serves the people.

The previous administration’s inability to produce tangible improvements, despite initial popular support, serves as a sobering lesson. The new government must prioritize the needs of citizens who are desperate for competent governance and respect for their lives and resources. Malawi faces numerous challenges: a healthcare system in crisis, a dysfunctional civil service, pervasive corruption, and key state enterprises plagued by scandal and mismanagement. Regional imbalances persist, natural resources are being pillaged through illegal mining, and existing mining deals shortchange the nation. The agriculture sector is withering, and freshwater resources remain underutilized.

Citizens expect the new government to restore credibility to key institutions through swift and visible reforms. This includes rebuilding the healthcare system, ensuring fair access to empowerment programs, and fulfilling long‑overdue promises to neglected regions. The government must also protect and properly steward the country’s natural wealth, halt illegal mining activities, and renegotiate existing mining deals to secure fair returns.

As the new administration takes shape, it must guard against opportunists and surround itself with honest advisors who prioritize the national interest over personal gain. President Mutharika has been given a second chance in history, with five years to demonstrate that lessons have been learned and that integrity will guide every decision. The Malawian people are watching and demand leadership that delivers measurable improvements to their daily lives. The choice and responsibility lie entirely with them, and the time for delivery has begun.
