The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has pledged to collaborate with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Osun State to tackle corruption in the electoral process, with a particular focus on vote buying—a pervasive problem in Nigerian elections. During a visit to INEC’s Osun State office, ICPC Resident Anti‑Corruption Commissioner Prince Yusuf Olatunji emphasized the importance of cooperation between the two agencies, especially with upcoming elections on the horizon.
Olatunji highlighted that the ICPC’s mandate extends beyond enforcement to include prevention and public enlightenment. As part of this effort, the commission aims to sensitize INEC staff and the wider public on the need to reject corruption at all levels. He stressed that vote buying is a significant concern and warned that individuals caught engaging in election‑related corruption will face consequences. While acknowledging that corruption is widespread in Nigerian society, Olatunji called on officials to uphold integrity.
INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner in Osun, Dr. Mutiu Agboke, responded by underscoring the importance of collaboration among stakeholders to ensure successful elections. He commended the ICPC for recognizing INEC as a key partner and affirmed his commitment to sustaining the partnership. Agboke proposed a broader sensitization campaign that would bring together stakeholders to educate the public on the importance of shunning corruption.
The partnership between ICPC and INEC in Osun State aims to promote electoral integrity and prevent corrupt practices. With elections approaching, this collaboration is crucial for ensuring the credibility of the process. By working together, both agencies seek to curb vote buying and foster a free and fair electoral environment, reinforcing the democratic foundation of Nigeria, which heavily depends on the integrity of INEC and the electoral process.
