The Lagos State Government has begun a demolition exercise at the Trade Fair Complex in Ojo to remove unsafe and illegal buildings. The operation, which started on Thursday, is a joint effort by the Ministry of Physical Planning, the Lagos State Building Control Agency, the Lagos State Urban Renewal Agency, and the Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority. Senior Special Assistant on New Media to Governor Babajide Sanwo‑Olu, Jubril, said the exercise aims to restore order and enforce physical‑planning laws in the area.
The demolition targets “illegal developments, structures without statutory approvals, defective structures, and buildings erected on road setbacks and drainages.” These non‑compliant structures pose risks to occupants and the public, and their removal is intended to prevent potential disasters and protect nearby residents.
The operation is supported by the Office of Infrastructure, members of the Lagos State House of Assembly, and security agencies, which provided backup during the exercise. Their involvement underscores the government’s commitment to enforcing physical‑planning regulations and maintaining public safety.
Located in the Ojo Local Government area, the Trade Fair Complex has been identified as a hotspot for illegal developments and non‑compliant structures. By clearing unsafe buildings, authorities hope to restore order, safeguard lives, and pave the way for redevelopment in line with the state’s urban‑renewal strategy.
The government’s enforcement of physical‑planning laws is expected to continue in other parts of the state, targeting similar illegal and non‑compliant structures. The outcome of this demolition will be closely monitored, and its impact on the community will be assessed in the coming days.
