NYSC Housing: CJAN Urges Govt To Prioritise Corps Members Accommodation

Improve corps members' accommodation — Advocacy group urges Nigerian govt, NYSC

The Corpers’ Journey Advocacy Network has urged the Federal Government and the National Youth Service Corps to prioritize the provision of decent and safe housing for corps members nationwide. According to the network’s Managing Director, Taiwo Ajayi, the wellbeing of corps members should be a central focus of the NYSC scheme. Poor housing conditions are a significant challenge faced by young Nigerians serving in remote or underdeveloped communities.

Reports from several service states indicate that many corps members are forced to secure accommodation independently, often residing in overcrowded apartments, rundown buildings, or unsafe environments. Ajayi emphasized that corps members, who dedicate a year of their lives to serve Nigeria, are national assets that deserve to be provided with decent accommodation, water, electricity, and other basic amenities.

The network is calling on the Federal Government to adopt a structured national policy that guarantees standardized housing for corps members across all states. This could involve partnerships between the NYSC, host communities, local governments, and private organizations to build or renovate corps lodges in strategic locations. Ajayi stressed that collaboration between the NYSC, local authorities, and the private sector is necessary to provide secure and habitable lodges for every corps member.

The NYSC has also been urged to strengthen its monitoring systems to ensure that schools, hospitals, and other institutions hosting corps members fulfill their accommodation promises. Despite current economic difficulties, prioritizing corps members’ welfare is crucial for national development and youth empowerment. Providing suitable housing is a right, not a privilege, and when corps members feel safe and respected, they are more motivated to serve their host communities effectively.

The issue of housing for corps members is not new, but it remains a pressing concern. The NYSC scheme was established to promote national unity and development, and providing decent housing is essential to achieving this goal. By prioritizing the wellbeing of corps members, the Federal Government and the NYSC can ensure that these young Nigerians are able to serve their country effectively and safely.
