Anambra Guber: ADC candidate attacks Moghalu, says LP ticket mere tissue paper

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) deputy governorship candidate, Dr. Ndubuisi Nwobu, has questioned the legitimacy of the Labour Party’s governorship ticket in the upcoming Anambra election. He asserted that the ticket held by Dr. George Moghalu is not valid, responding to a query about why the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is backing Moghalu instead of the ADC’s candidate, John Nwosu.

Nwobu raised doubts about the primary that produced Moghalu as the Labour Party’s candidate, citing a Supreme Court judgment that declared there was no legitimate leadership in the party at the time of the primary. He argued that without valid party leadership, the primary election—and consequently Moghalu’s emergence as the candidate—are questionable.

The ADC deputy governorship candidate also addressed the perceived lack of involvement from prominent figures in the ADC coalition during the Anambra governorship campaign. He explained that the party is supporting its candidates, but logistical challenges and the busy schedules of these stakeholders have limited their visibility on the campaign trail. Nevertheless, he assured that these high‑profile individuals will appear at the party’s grand finale campaign event.

This development highlights the complexities and challenges in Nigeria’s political landscape, especially concerning party leadership and candidate selection. The Anambra governorship election is significant, and the legitimacy of candidates and their party affiliations is under intense scrutiny. As the election approaches, the participation and endorsement of prominent political figures will be closely watched, with potential implications for the state’s political future.

In the broader context of Nigerian politics—where party allegiance and leadership disputes are common—the situation in Anambra reflects systemic issues. The electoral process and the courts’ role in resolving disputes over nominations and party leadership are critical to the democratic process. As campaigns intensify, the focus on candidate legitimacy and the integrity of the electoral process will remain a central theme in the run‑up to the election.
