Nigerian govt mobilises rescue operations — Daily Nigerian

A mining pit collapse in the Kadauri Community of Maru Local Government Area, Zamfara, has claimed multiple lives and prompted the Federal Government to launch rescue operations. The incident occurred on Thursday night after several hours of heavy rainfall, and officials linked it to the presence of illegal miners in the area. The Zamfara Government confirmed ten deaths, reporting that several artisanal miners were trapped.

Minister of Solid Minerals Development Dr. Dele Alake said that first responders, working with state officials, have begun rescue efforts and will seal the site afterward. Federal mines officers in the state will lead the rescue, investigate the circumstances of the collapse, and produce a comprehensive report. The minister noted that the heavy rain triggered the collapse, which was worsened by unlawful mining activities. At least fifteen itinerant mine workers were trapped; thirteen bodies have been recovered, all without survivors. Efforts continue to retrieve the remaining two individuals still buried in the rubble.

Dr. Alake described the loss of life as avoidable and highlighted the environmental and safety risks inherent to the terrain. The area consists of loose sand and traces of gold, making it attractive for alluvial mining. However, illegal miners—who bring in itinerant workers equipped with rudimentary tools and disregard safety protocols—have contributed to this tragedy.

The Federal Government, under President Bola Tinubu, is addressing illegal mining in Zamfara through military clearance operations coordinated by the National Security Adviser. The ministry has also begun installing satellite surveillance systems to strengthen oversight and monitoring of mining sites nationwide. This initiative aims to enable real‑time monitoring, allow proactive responses to incidents, and deter illegal activities.

The minister reaffirmed the government’s zero‑tolerance stance on illegal mining, warning perpetrators to desist or face the full weight of the law. The administration is committed to eradicating illegal mining, reducing mine collapses, and tightening the net around those who sponsor such illicit activities.
