The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) has assured the public that its planned strike, set to begin on Monday, will not cause petrol shortages. President Festus Osifo made this statement during an interview on Channels Television’s “Sunday Politics” program. Earlier, the union had instructed its members nationwide to withdraw their services in protest against the alleged mass dismissal of Nigerian workers by the Dangote Refinery, prompting concerns that the strike might lead to long queues at filling stations.

Osifo clarified that the union’s action will not immediately affect the supply of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS). He explained that any impact from the strike would not be felt in the short term, so Nigerians should not expect to line up for fuel. However, he confirmed that PENGASSAN has shut down gas supplies to refineries, fertilizer plants, and other related facilities as a response to the alleged dismissals at the Dangote Refinery. The union’s move, he emphasized, demonstrates its commitment to protecting its members’ interests.

The strike is intended to address the concerns of Nigerian workers in the petroleum and natural gas sector, a key component of the country’s economy. The Dangote Refinery, a major industry player, could see far‑reaching consequences if its operations are disrupted. As the strike commences, it remains to be seen how the situation will evolve and what measures will be taken to resolve the union’s grievances and protect affected workers.

For now, PENGASSAN’s assurance that the strike will not lead to petrol scarcity offers some relief to Nigerians worried about the impact on their daily lives. The union’s actions will be closely monitored, and any developments will be eagerly anticipated as the situation continues to unfold.
