The Nigerian government has announced plans for a low-key celebration of the country’s 65th Independence Day anniversary. According to the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, the theme of the celebration is “All Hands on Deck.” The minister made this known at a pre-independence world press conference in Abuja on Monday.
The celebration commenced with Jummat Prayers on Friday and a Thanksgiving Service on Sunday. Other activities lined up to mark the anniversary include the unveiling of the National Value Charter, which is being championed by the National Orientation Agency (NOA). The charter is a framework designed to cultivate national pride and foster responsible citizenship by outlining the government’s commitments and citizens’ obligations.
The National Value Charter is divided into two parts: the “Nigerian Promise” and the “Citizen’s Commitment.” The “Nigerian Promise” details the government’s commitment to values such as equality, freedom, democracy, entrepreneurship, peace, inclusivity, and meritocracy. On the other hand, the “Citizen’s Commitment” outlines individual responsibilities, including discipline, accountability, tolerance, leadership, and environmental awareness.
The NOA’s campaign aims to promote these principles through sensitization drives, collaboration with community stakeholders, and leveraging digital platforms to build a more unified and value-driven society. The National Students’ debate is another activity scheduled to hold as part of the anniversary celebration.
The 65th Independence Day anniversary provides an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on the country’s progress and challenges. The government’s decision to mark the occasion with a low-key celebration may be seen as a response to the current economic and social realities facing the nation. Nevertheless, the unveiling of the National Value Charter and other activities planned for the anniversary highlight the government’s commitment to promoting national unity and responsible citizenship. As Nigeria marks this significant milestone, the focus on national values and citizenship is expected to resonate with Nigerians and promote a sense of patriotism and national pride.
