The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Wednesday, 1 October 2025, a public holiday to commemorate the country’s 65th Independence Anniversary. The announcement was made by Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji‑Ojo on behalf of the government. In his statement, the minister congratulated Nigerians and urged them to remain patriotic and supportive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

The holiday marks 65 years since Nigeria gained independence from Britain on 1 October 1960, a milestone that invites reflection on the nation’s progress and aspirations for a brighter future. While the government has cancelled the Independence Anniversary parade that was originally scheduled for the same day, it emphasized that this does not diminish the significance of the occasion. All other planned programmes will proceed as scheduled, and the government expressed regret for any inconvenience the cancellation may cause to Nigerians, the diplomatic community, and guests.

The statement reaffirmed the government’s commitment to celebrating Nigeria’s independence with dignity and enthusiasm, and called on citizens to support President Tinubu’s reforms aimed at building a greater nation. As the celebrations unfold, Nigerians are expected to come together to commemorate their country’s independence and look forward to a more prosperous and stable future.
