PDP Chieftain Criticizes National Assembly Over Alleged Rubber-Stamp Legislature

A prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party, Adetokunbo Pearse, has expressed concerns about the National Assembly’s performance, alleging that it has neglected its constitutional duties and is primarily serving the interests of President Bola Tinubu. In a recent interview on Arise Television, Pearse stated that the current National Assembly has become a rubber-stamp legislature, readily complying with the president’s demands.

According to Pearse, this development is detrimental to the progress and security of Nigerians. He noted that any president who wishes to manipulate the National Assembly can do so, and in this case, President Tinubu is exerting significant influence. Pearse’s comments suggest that the legislature is not functioning independently, which could have implications for the country’s governance and democratic processes.

Pearse also criticized the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, questioning his suitability to lead the legislature. He referenced ongoing cases with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) against Akpabio, which allegedly involve millions of dollars stolen during his tenure as governor. Pearse’s statements imply that Akpabio’s past actions may compromise his ability to effectively lead the Senate.

The National Assembly plays a crucial role in Nigeria’s democratic system, serving as a check on the executive branch and representing the interests of citizens. If the legislature is indeed being manipulated, it could undermine the country’s democratic institutions and have far-reaching consequences. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the National Assembly will respond to these criticisms and whether it will reassert its independence.

The allegations made by Pearse are likely to spark further debate about the state of Nigeria’s democratic institutions and the role of the National Assembly in holding the executive branch accountable. As the country navigates these challenges, international observers will be watching closely to see how the situation develops and what implications it may have for Nigeria’s governance and stability.
