El-Rufai: He’s an asset but has weakness to work on - SDP chieftain

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Nigeria is gearing up for the 2027 general elections. Its leader and 2023 presidential candidate, Prince Adewole Adebayo, expressed confidence that the party is prepared to offer a credible alternative to the nation’s challenges. According to Adebayo, the SDP remains distinct from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), emphasizing integrity and clear principles.

The SDP is undergoing leadership reforms to ensure accountability and discipline among its members. Adebayo revealed that during his presidential campaign some party members worked against him, including state chairmen who allegedly gave the party’s agent cards to another party. He cited Kwara as an example, where the party discovered a significant discrepancy in vote counting—only 22,000 votes were recorded out of more than 122,000 cast. To address such issues, the SDP is replacing certain leaders and bringing in new members.

Adebayo emphasized that building a political party composed of selfless and patriotic individuals takes time. He stated that the SDP is focused on creating a structure rooted in patriotism and selflessness, with members who are in politics solely to improve the country. The party aims to correct the foundational flaws inherited from early nationalists such as Herbert Macaulay, Nnamdi Azikiwe, and Ahmadu Bello through value‑based politics and people‑oriented leadership.

These reform and repositioning efforts come as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections. With a commitment to integrity, accountability, and patriotism, the SDP seeks to provide a viable alternative to the APC and PDP. As the election approaches, the party’s ability to deliver on its promises and address the nation’s challenges will be closely watched by Nigerians and the international community. Its success in building a strong, principled foundation will be crucial in determining its impact on the country’s political landscape.
