Anambra Guber: 'Some politicians sleeping in INEC office, trying to do wuruwuru' - Soludo

Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo has accused certain state politicians of trying to manipulate the upcoming governorship election by allegedly sleeping in the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). He made the allegation during a panel discussion in Abuja on innovation in electoral technology from 2015 to 2025.

According to the governor, some politicians lack confidence in the integrity of the electoral process and therefore seek to influence the outcome. He described this mindset as part of the “Nigerian factor,” where some individuals believe success can only be achieved through unethical means—referred to locally as “wuruwuru” or “wayo,” meaning manipulation or fraud. While some politicians are busy campaigning, others are focused on subverting the system, a practice that undermines the democratic principle of one person, one vote.

Soludo urged politicians to have faith in the electoral system and allow the people’s votes to count. His accusation comes as Anambra State prepares for its governorship election next month, an election expected to be closely contested and subject to intense scrutiny regarding its integrity. The governor’s remarks highlight the challenges faced by INEC in ensuring a credible and transparent election and underscore the need for politicians to adhere to democratic principles and respect the will of the people.

In the broader context of Nigeria’s electoral history, such accusations are not unprecedented; there have been past instances of politicians attempting to manipulate results. Nonetheless, Soludo’s statement serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding democratic values and maintaining a free, fair, and independent electoral process.
