Nigeria’s Vice-President, Kashim Shettima, has emphasized the importance of supporting the Dangote Refinery, a $20 billion facility, amidst a rift between the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) and the refinery. Speaking at the Nigerian Economic Summit 2025 in Abuja, Shettima stressed that the 650,000-barrel-per-day refinery is a national asset that must be protected at all costs to ensure its success.
The Vice-President highlighted the significance of the refinery, noting that Aliko Dangote, the founder, is a leading figure in Nigeria’s economy. Shettima praised Dangote’s decision to invest in his country, rather than abroad, and emphasized the need to safeguard his interests and those of the refinery. He pointed out that if Dangote had invested in a foreign company, such as Microsoft, Amazon, or Google, his wealth would likely be significantly higher.
Shettima called for caution and patriotism from both labor and the private sector, urging them to prioritize the nation’s economic interests over individual disputes. He stated that Nigeria’s progress should not be held hostage by minor labor disagreements, emphasizing that the country’s interests supersede those of any individual or group, including PENGASSAN.
The Vice-President’s comments come as the Dangote Refinery is expected to play a crucial role in Nigeria’s economic development. The refinery, which is one of the largest in Africa, has the potential to significantly reduce the country’s reliance on imported fuel and create thousands of jobs. Shettima’s statement underscores the government’s commitment to supporting the refinery and promoting economic growth.
The disagreement between PENGASSAN and the Dangote Refinery has sparked concerns about the impact on the country’s economy. However, Shettima’s statement suggests that the government is committed to finding a resolution that prioritizes the nation’s interests. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the parties involved will work towards a mutually beneficial solution.
