John Chuma Nwosu, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate for the Anambra State governorship, has sworn an affidavit pledging to serve only one term if elected. His commitment aligns with the state’s unwritten zoning formula, which rotates the governorship among the three zones. Nwosu hails from Nnewi in Anambra South, the same zone as incumbent Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, who is seeking re‑election after his first term.
By limiting his tenure, Nwosu aims to demonstrate transparency, accountability and selflessness in governance. During his appearance at the High Court in Awka, where he deposited the affidavit, he emphasized that leadership should focus on delivering results within a clear timeframe rather than clinging to power. “I came into the race to serve, not to rule. I have publicly made the commitment before and have now legally sealed it before the court. Four years is enough to transform Anambra if there is sincerity of purpose,” he said.
Nwosu’s pledge is seen as a significant step toward prioritizing the state’s interests over personal ambition. The Anambra State governorship election, scheduled for November 8, will feature several candidates vying for the top post. As the election approaches, his one‑term promise may resonate with voters seeking a leader dedicated to the state’s best interests. In Anambra, the zoning formula has been crucial for ensuring rotational representation among the three zones, and Nwosu’s commitment to upholding it could be a strategic move to attract support across the state. The impact of his pledge on the election outcome and the future of governance in Anambra remains to be seen.
