A member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Ojotu Ojema, has officially joined the All Progressives Congress, APC. The defection ceremony took place on Friday, October 10, 2025, at the Government House in Makurdi, Benue State, and was attended by a large crowd of party supporters and top government officials.
Ojema, who represents the Apa/Agatu Federal Constituency, cited spiritual and strategic reasons for his decision to leave the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. He stated that his move was inspired by divine direction and a desire to contribute to the development of Benue State. The lawmaker emphasized that his decision was well thought out and aimed at achieving specific objectives.
During his speech, Ojema reflected on his tenure as State Chairman of the Joint Public Service Negotiation Councils, where he played a key role in securing the approval of the N30,000 minimum wage. He commended Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia for ensuring regular payment of workers’ salaries, which he noted was a realization of his long-standing advocacy for civil servants’ welfare.
Ojema also expressed support for Governor Alia’s infrastructure initiatives, particularly road projects connecting Agatu and Gwer West Local Government Areas. He believes these projects will enhance mobility, political engagement, and regional growth. The lawmaker attributed his political journey to divine guidance, saying he always seeks spiritual direction before making key decisions.
Ojema’s defection to the APC is seen as a significant development in Benue State’s political landscape. With his move, he aims to support the reelection of President Tinubu, Governor Alia, and his own candidacy in 2027. The lawmaker praised Governor Alia as a “fantastic leader” who has proven himself to be the best thing to happen to the state. Ojema’s decision is expected to have implications for the political dynamics in Benue State and Nigeria at large.
