Technology can’t end electoral flaws - Former INEC Chair, Yakubu

Former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission Prof Mahmood Yakubu warns that technology alone cannot eradicate the flaws undermining the credibility of Nigeria’s elections. In his newly released book, *Election Management in Nigeria: 2015–2025*, Yakubu reflects on his two‑term tenure—from 2015 to 2025—and offers a comprehensive account of the commission’s operations, achievements, and setbacks.

The 200‑page publication details the milestones, lessons and challenges encountered during what Yakubu describes as one of the most significant periods in Nigerian election management. While acknowledging that technology has advanced the electoral process, he stresses that it is not a panacea. Technical challenges with equipment and frequent connectivity failures, he notes, have hindered the smooth conduct of elections.

In response, the Independent National Electoral Commission implemented a series of reforms: intensified voter education, enhanced training for electoral officials, and closer collaboration with security agencies to safeguard voters and personnel. The commission also developed policies to guide the deployment of electoral technology.

Yakubu emphasizes the need for continued reform and vigilance to address the ongoing challenges facing Nigeria’s electoral system. The book provides a detailed account of the commission’s efforts to strengthen the process, including the introduction of new technologies and procedures. However, his comments highlight the necessity of a more nuanced approach to the complex issues affecting election credibility.

As Nigeria continues to navigate electoral reform, Yakubu’s reflections offer valuable insights into the progress made and the work still required. The publication serves as a reminder of the importance of ongoing efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic institutions and ensure the integrity of its electoral process.
