Cape Verde qualifies for the World Cup for the first time after beating Eswatini

Cape Verde secured a historic place in the 2026 World Cup after a 3‑0 victory over Eswatini in African qualifying, marking the archipelago’s first ever appearance in the tournament. The win clinched one of the nine automatic spots allocated to the continent, giving the volcanic islands off Africa’s western coast a place among the world’s elite.

With a population of roughly 525,000, Cape Verde will become the second smallest nation by population to qualify, after Iceland’s debut in 2018. The triumph was sealed by goals from Dailon Livramento (48th minute), Willy Semedo (54th minute) and Stopira in stoppage time, delivering a home win and first place in Group D. FIFA President Gianni Infantino praised the achievement, highlighting Cape Verde’s rapid football development and noting that the moment will elevate its players to global recognition and inspire a new generation of fans.

Cape Verde finished four points ahead of Cameroon, which drew 0‑0 with Angola at home. While Cameroon can still advance as a runner‑up, Cape Verde’s victory guarantees its participation in the expanded 48‑team World Cup. The nine group winners qualify automatically, and the four best runners‑up will contest a mini‑tournament in November.

In celebration, the Cape Verde government declared a half‑day holiday so citizens could watch the match, which saw tickets sell out in record time, according to FIFA. Elsewhere in Group D, Mauritius and Libya drew 0‑0, while in Group C Lesotho beat Zimbabwe 1‑0. Cape Verde’s qualification represents a major milestone for the nation’s football team and its supporters, who will now have the chance to see their side compete on the world stage.
