The United States Army War College has posthumously inducted Nigeria’s 23rd Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, into its prestigious International Hall of Fame. This recognition took place during the opening ceremony of the Association of the United States Army Annual Convention in Washington D.C.
According to Lieutenant Colonel Appolonia Anele, Acting Director of Army Public Relations, the late General Lagbaja’s induction is a major milestone for Nigeria, as he is the first Nigerian Army officer to be enshrined in the USAWC International Hall of Fame in its 124-year history. The Commandant of the USAWC, Major General Trevor J. Bredenkamp, presented the posthumous honour in recognition of the late General’s “sterling leadership, visionary service, and outstanding contributions to international peace and security.”
The honour underscores his exemplary service and distinguished career, which culminated in his appointment as Nigeria’s 23rd Chief of Army Staff. Major General Adeleke Ayannuga, representing the Chief of Army Staff, received the honour on behalf of the Nigerian Army, alongside Maria Lagbaja, the late Army Chief’s widow. Other dignitaries present included Major General G.O. Adesina, Director General of the Nigerian Army Heritage and Future Centre, and Deborah Aboderin of the Office of Security Cooperation, U.S. Embassy, Abuja.
Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, in his message, expressed pride and gratitude over the honour bestowed upon one of Nigeria’s most distinguished military leaders. The recognition reinforces the Nigerian Army’s commitment to professionalism, discipline, and global peacekeeping ideals. The USAWC International Hall of Fame induction, which featured six eminent alumni this year, cements General Lagbaja’s place among an elite circle of global military leaders celebrated for their extraordinary contributions to peace and international cooperation.
The induction is a significant recognition of General Lagbaja’s contributions to international peace and security, and it highlights the strong ties between the Nigerian Army and the United States Army. The Nigerian Army’s participation in the AUSA 2025 Annual Convention demonstrates its commitment to global peacekeeping and cooperation. The recognition of General Lagbaja’s service and sacrifice will likely serve as an inspiration to current and future military leaders, reinforcing the importance of professionalism, discipline, and global cooperation in achieving peace and security.
