A former National Youth Leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Sunday Udeh-Okoye, has predicted that another Southeast state will soon come under the control of the All Progressives Congress (APC). This statement was made during an interview on Channels Television’s ‘Politics Today’ program.
Udeh-Okoye’s prediction follows his own defection to the APC, along with other party leaders in Enugu State, including Governor Peter Mbah. The defections were reportedly driven by leadership and management failures within the PDP, rather than an attempt to crush the opposition.
The APC’s growing influence in the South-East region is seen as a significant development, with the party already governing Imo, Ebonyi, and Enugu States. Anambra State is currently under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), while Abia State is governed by the Labour Party.
When asked to specify which state he believed would fall under APC control, Udeh-Okoye declined to comment, citing classified information. However, he emphasized that the APC’s expanding presence in the region was unstoppable.
The recent defections have significant implications for the political landscape in Nigeria, particularly in the Southeast geopolitical zone. The zone comprises five states: Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo. Governor Mbah’s defection was facilitated by high-ranking APC officials, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and the APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda.
As the APC continues to expand its presence in the South-East, it remains to be seen which state will be the next to fall under its control. Udeh-Okoye’s prediction has sparked interest and speculation among political observers, who will be watching the region closely for further developments. The APC’s growing influence in the region is likely to have significant implications for the country’s political landscape, and its impact will be closely monitored in the coming months.
