Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, has responded to remarks made by Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate. During a visit to LEA Primary School in Kuje, Abuja, Obi described the condition of public schools in the FCT as a “national disgrace.”
Olayinka said the FCT administration is focused on implementing genuine, measurable development projects, contrasting this with what he called “beer‑parlour‑style development” that he alleges characterized Obi’s tenure as governor of Anambra State. He noted that the administration is actively addressing dilapidated schools, with renovation work underway at 73 schools across the six area councils and 21 schools already completed.
The spokesperson challenged Obi to disclose his achievements in the education sector while he was governor, pointing out that Obi’s administration failed to improve key areas such as education. Olayinka also accused Obi of mismanaging state funds, which he says has contributed to Anambra State’s current difficulties. In response to Obi’s claim that he could transform Nigeria in four years, Olayinka asked how Obi could not achieve significant progress in Anambra during his eight‑year tenure.
Olayinka further expressed doubt about Obi’s political future, questioning which party he intends to contest the 2027 presidential election under and whether any party would nominate him again. The exchange underscores the ongoing debates about governance and development in Nigeria. The FCT’s school‑renovation efforts form part of a broader initiative to tackle the country’s development challenges, as politicians and officials face increasing scrutiny to fulfill their promises and demonstrate commitment to national progress.
