DRC: Health workers say Ebola outbreak in Kasai being brought under control

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Kasai province is showing signs of containment, according to local health officials. After more than a month of intensive efforts, progress is being made in the remote town of Bulape, where the epidemic was first declared on September 4—marking the region’s first Ebola outbreak in 18 years.

Health workers on the ground report a coordinated response, with national and international partners providing aid and support. Jean‑Paul Mbantshi, chief medical officer of the Bulape health zone, said that national mobilization and the arrival of assistance have made it possible to control the epidemic sufficiently. He expressed optimism that the situation will continue to improve, predicting that there will be no contacts to follow up on within a few days.

As of mid‑October, only one confirmed patient remained under treatment in Bulape, according to Doctors Without Borders. The response’s slow start was due to a lack of funds and resources, but authorities and aid organizations have since supplied crucial medical items, including vaccines. The World Health Organization reported a total of 64 cases and 45 deaths in Kasai province as of October 12. The vaccine has been a key factor in bringing the situation under control; Bulape village chief Sylvain Bidiaka described the outlook as promising.

The containment of the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo is a significant development, given the challenges faced by health workers. The coordinated response and arrival of aid have been essential in limiting the virus’s spread, and health officials are cautiously optimistic about the future. As the situation evolves, the international community is expected to remain vigilant, continuing to provide support and assistance to those affected by the outbreak.
