Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, former Governor of Osun State and National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), stressed that the party offers a credible alternative in Nigeria’s political arena ahead of the 2027 general elections. Speaking at the unveiling of the ADC’s new state secretariat in Ilorin, Kwara State, Aregbesola criticised the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for a governance record he described as marked by widespread hunger, personal enrichment and political intimidation. He linked the country’s economic hardships to the APC’s leadership failures and suggested that these failures would drive greater support toward the ADC, a party he said is founded on discipline, accountability and service to the people.
Former Kwara State Governor Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed also addressed the event, declaring that the emergence of the ADC signals the start of a new political movement in Kwara aimed at creating a governance model that reflects the collective aspirations of its citizens. Ahmed highlighted the urgent need for the government to restore confidence among farmers, who are suffering from insecurity and need assurance that they can safely return to their farms.
Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC’s National Publicity Secretary and former Minister of Youth and Sports, asserted that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has lost relevance, positioning the ADC as the sole viable opposition party in Kwara and across Nigeria. Abdullahi expressed concern over rising insecurity, especially in rural areas, and emphasized the ADC’s commitment to promoting safety and good governance.
The ADC’s rapid expansion since its launch three months ago indicates a significant shift in the political landscape. As the 2027 general elections approach, the party’s ability to convince voters of its credibility as an alternative to the APC will be crucial. By focusing on Nigeria’s economic and security challenges, the ADC may resonate with voters seeking change. With its emphasis on discipline, accountability and service, the ADC is poised to play a significant role in shaping the country’s political future.
