African Democratic Congress Suspends Vice Chairman

Crisis looms as ADC suspends vice chairman, former Nigerian minister Usani

A crisis is unfolding within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) opposition coalition, as the party has suspended its National Vice Chairman, South-South, Usani Uguru Usani, effective immediately. The decision was made by the State Working Committee (SWC) of the ADC’s Cross River State Chapter, citing actions deemed detrimental to the party’s unity and progress.

According to a statement released by the party, Usani’s recent conduct was inconsistent with the ADC Constitution, prompting the SWC to deliberate on several petitions and reports accusing him of anti-party activities, insubordination, and acts that could undermine the party’s image and electoral prospects. The suspension will remain in effect pending a formal investigation by the relevant party organs.

The committee also expressed dissatisfaction with the appointment of Ms Jackie Wayas as Deputy National Publicity Secretary, citing a lack of consultation with the state leadership prior to her appointment. Wayas has allegedly not engaged with the Cross River State leadership since assuming the role, and her loyalty is perceived to be skewed against the unity and growth of the ADC in the state. The SWC has urged the National Leadership to review her appointment and replace her with a competent individual from Cross River State.

Furthermore, the Cross River ADC has raised concerns over individuals who publicly declared their intention to join the party but have yet to formalize their membership. The committee warned that the ADC will not tolerate dual membership or allow its platform to be used by individuals pursuing multiple partisan interests. The statement directed all coalition leaders and intending members to complete their registration at their respective ward levels within seven days, ending October 25, 2025, or risk exclusion from leadership and decision-making processes.

The developments within the ADC come at a critical time for the opposition coalition, as it navigates internal dynamics and prepares for future elections. The party’s internal mechanisms for discipline, justice, and accountability are set to take their full course, and members have been urged to remain calm and steadfast. As the situation unfolds, the ADC’s ability to maintain unity and cohesion will be closely watched, with potential implications for the party’s electoral prospects and the broader political landscape.
