Northern monarchs meet in Kebbi over rising insecurity

Traditional rulers from Northern Nigeria have gathered in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, for a two-day meeting to address pressing issues in the region, including the escalating insecurity in the North West. The meeting, which commences on Tuesday and concludes on Wednesday, will be officially opened by Governor Nasir Idris, with the Emir of Gwandu, Alhaji Muhammadu Iliyasu Bashar, serving as the host.

Several first-class traditional rulers arrived in Birnin Kebbi on Monday, ahead of the meeting. Notable attendees include the Emir of Kagara, Malam Ahmed Garba Gunna; the Etsu Nupe, Dr. Yahaya Abubakar; the Shehu of Bama, Alhaji (Dr.) Umar Kyari Umar El-Kanemi; and the Emir of Biu. Upon arrival, the Shehu of Bama and the Emir of Biu paid a courtesy visit to the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji (Dr.) Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai Al-Amin El-Kanemi, at his guest house in Birnin Kebbi.

The meeting, organized under the Northern Traditional Rulers Council, aims to deliberate on the worsening insecurity and other socio-economic challenges confronting the northern region. The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, is leading the delegation of traditional rulers. The council’s meeting is significant, as it brings together prominent leaders to discuss and find solutions to the region’s challenges.

The North West region has been experiencing growing insecurity, with instances of banditry, kidnapping, and other criminal activities. The meeting provides a platform for traditional rulers to share their perspectives and expertise in addressing these issues.
