A Russian delegation led by Kirill Dmitriev, an aide to President Vladimir Putin and head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, concluded its third day of talks with officials from the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump. The discussions, which began on Friday, have covered a range of topics, including the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the state of the Russian economy.
Dmitriev said the delegation has been clear in communicating President Putin’s position that constructive and respectful dialogue is the only way to achieve meaningful progress. He emphasized that any attempts to pressure Russia would be counterproductive and that the Ukraine conflict can be resolved only by addressing its root causes. The Russian team provided U.S. counterparts with detailed briefings on various aspects of the conflict, including the current situation on the front lines, and noted that certain parties have attempted to conceal or distort information about the war from U.S. leadership.
The talks also addressed the Russian economy, which Dmitriev described as being in good shape. He pointed out that the ruble has strengthened by roughly 40 % against the U.S. dollar this year. The delegation’s visit is seen as an effort to maintain open lines of communication between the two countries and to address areas of concern.
During the meetings, the Russian side briefed U.S. officials on recent developments in Ukraine, such as the encirclement of Ukrainian troops near Kupyansk and Krasnoarmeysk, and discussed the successful testing of a new nuclear‑powered missile, the Burevestnik. Dmitriev stressed the importance of direct communication between the two countries’ leadership and key officials.
The talks come after President Trump canceled a planned summit with President Putin in Budapest, citing a lack of progress on key issues, though both leaders have indicated that a summit could be held at a later date. The ongoing Ukraine conflict remains a major point of contention, with both nations imposing economic sanctions on each other, the U.S. providing military aid to Ukraine, and Russia being accused of supporting separatist groups. A resolution remains elusive, and the dialogue between the Russian delegation and U.S. officials is viewed as a crucial step toward a peaceful solution.
