Former Labour Party National Officer Kenneth Okonkwo has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of using intimidation tactics to disrupt opposition activities ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections. He made these claims during an appearance on Arise Television’s Morning Show, where he discussed the challenges faced by the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Okonkwo said the ADC has been repeatedly attacked while holding meetings in several states, including Kaduna, Lagos, and Ekiti. He alleged that thugs, acting under the supervision of security agencies, were being manipulated by the APC to frustrate opposition parties. According to him, such actions violate the Electoral Act, which mandates equal protection for all political parties.
Despite these setbacks, Okonkwo expressed confidence in the ADC’s prospects, stating that the party would form the next government. He described the APC as “already imploding” due to internal issues and reliance on “sycophants,” predicting that the ADC would emerge victorious in the upcoming elections.
The allegations of intimidation and the manipulation of security institutions raise serious concerns about the fairness and transparency of Nigeria’s electoral process. The Electoral Act is intended to ensure a level playing field for all parties, and any attempts to undermine this principle could have far‑reaching implications for the country’s democracy. As the 2027 elections approach, the conduct of political parties and security agencies will be closely watched by Nigerians and the international community. Ensuring that opposition parties can operate freely and participate without interference is essential for the legitimacy of the elections, and Okonkwo’s accusations underscore the need for vigilance and adherence to democratic principles.
