INEC under Mahmoud Yakubu national disgrace - Atedo Peterside

Atedo Peterside, founder of Stanbic IBTC Bank Plc and the Anap Foundation, has strongly criticized the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) under Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu. In a recent interview on Channels Television’s *Politics Today* program, Peterside called the previous INEC administration a “national disgrace.”

When asked about his expectations for the new INEC leadership headed by Prof. Joash Amupitan and the upcoming off‑cycle elections in Anambra and Ekiti states, Peterside expressed skepticism about the commission’s ability to conduct fair elections. He pointed to alleged manipulation of result sheets, which he said could be verified on the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV). Peterside cited specific discrepancies, noting instances where figures were altered without corresponding changes to the accompanying text, and argued that these inconsistencies undermine the credibility of the electoral process.

The comments come as Nigeria prepares for crucial elections in Anambra and Ekiti, with the new INEC leadership under intense scrutiny regarding its capacity to ensure free and fair polls. The commission has previously faced criticism over allegations of vote manipulation and irregularities, and the forthcoming elections will test its commitment to transparency and accountability.

As Nigeria strives to strengthen its democratic institutions, credible elections are essential for maintaining public trust and ensuring national stability. The international community will be watching closely, hoping that Nigeria makes significant progress in consolidating its democratic gains. Moving forward, it is vital that all stakeholders—including the electoral commission, political parties, and civil society organizations—collaborate to guarantee an electoral process that is fair, transparent, and truly reflective of the will of the Nigerian people.
