Public affairs commentator Mahdi Shehu has warned Nigerians living abroad to be wary of a recent statement made by Senate President Godswill Akpabio about the country’s condition. Shehu described Akpabio’s remarks as misleading and untrue, arguing that they present a false picture of progress and stability in Nigeria.
In a post on his official social‑media account, Shehu urged the diaspora to ignore what he called political propaganda. He highlighted the stark realities facing the nation: widespread hunger, unemployment and malnutrition. According to Shehu, 139 million Nigerians are struggling with hunger, 60 million youths are jobless, and over 30 million children suffer from severe malnutrition. He also noted that Nigeria’s debt stock has risen to N170 trillion and continues to grow.
Shehu cautioned Nigerians abroad to exercise caution if they consider returning home, stating, “come back home at your own risk.” He reinforced his message with biblical verses—Psalm 10:7 and Ephesians 5:6—warning against deceitful leadership and empty words. He emphasized that Nigerian leaders have made deception a permanent culture, prioritizing lies over citizens’ welfare.
The commentator stressed that the diaspora should not be swayed by political speeches that do not reflect on‑the‑ground realities. Instead, they should remain aware of the harsh conditions endured by the majority of citizens, including poverty, unemployment and poor governance. Shehu’s comments come amid growing concerns about Nigeria’s economy and governance, and it remains to be seen how the government will address the issues raised by him and other critics. Meanwhile, Nigerians living abroad are advised to stay vigilant and informed about the situation in their home country.
