Abimbola Olawunmi, an All Progressives Congress (APC) aspirant in the upcoming Ekiti State governorship election, has alleged that the party imposed incumbent governor Biodun Oyebanji on the state. He made the claim during an interview on Arise Television, saying he would not support Oyebanji’s candidacy because of a flawed nomination process.
According to Olawunmi, the process that produced Oyebanji as the APC candidate for the 2027 election was fundamentally defective, and therefore he cannot endorse him. He also cited the sentiment of Ekiti residents, who reportedly have indicated they do not intend to vote for Oyebanji in the forthcoming gubernatorial race. Olawunmi questioned Oyebanji’s confidence in contesting the election, asking how he could expect to win the general election if he lacked confidence to compete fairly in the primaries.
This development highlights internal conflicts within the APC in Ekiti State, which may affect the party’s prospects in the upcoming election. The APC had earlier announced Oyebanji as its candidate for the 2027 governorship, but Olawunmi’s allegations suggest the nomination was contentious. The Ekiti governorship race is expected to be keenly contested, with multiple parties and candidates vying for the top seat.
As the election approaches, voters in Ekiti will be watching closely to see how parties and candidates navigate the political landscape. The outcome will depend on factors such as candidate popularity, campaign strategies, and voter decisions. For now, Olawunmi’s refusal to support Oyebanji adds a new dimension to the contest, and it remains to be seen how this will impact the APC’s chances in the state.
