The Niger State Independent Electoral Commission has finalized preparations for the upcoming Local Government Council elections, scheduled to take place on November 1, 2025. A total of 10 political parties will be contesting for various positions, including chairmanship and councillorship seats across the state’s 25 local government areas.
According to NSIEC Chairman, Mohammed Jibrin Imam, the commission is committed to conducting an election that reflects the will of the people and stands the test of integrity. Imam stated that the distribution of sensitive and non-sensitive materials to all 25 local government areas has been completed, ensuring a smooth electoral process.
In an effort to promote peaceful elections, all 10 participating parties have signed a peace accord, pledging to conduct a free, fair, and credible electioneering process. The commission has also monitored the party primaries of all participating parties, as required by the Electoral Act, and engaged with stakeholders to provide a level playing field for all participants.
The elections will feature a manual accreditation system, with over 5,000 ad hoc staff deployed to conduct the elections across all 274 wards in the state. Security measures have been put in place, including restrictions on vehicular movement from 6 am to 6 pm on election day, except for essential services.
The contesting parties include the ruling All Progressives Congress, Peoples Democratic Party, Social Democratic Party, and six other parties. The NSIEC chairman urged political actors to adhere strictly to the peace accord and maintain a level playing field for all participants.
With the elections fast approaching, the commission’s commitment to a fair and credible process is crucial. The outcome of the elections will be closely watched, as it will have significant implications for the state’s governance and development. The Niger State Independent Electoral Commission’s efforts to ensure a peaceful and transparent electoral process are a step in the right direction, and the international community will be monitoring the situation closely.
