Former Vice‑President Atiku Abubakar and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi have called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure a free and transparent governorship election in Anambra State, scheduled for next Saturday. Atiku stressed that the election offers an opportunity to end the era of poor governance in the state and to prevent the ruling All Progressives Congress from manipulating the outcome. He urged voters to support the African Democratic Congress candidates—Nwosu Chima John and Nwobu Geoffrey Ndubisi—to lead the state into a new era of prosperity and economic stability, and he appealed to the electoral body, under Professor Joash Amupitan, to demonstrate its integrity and commitment to free and fair elections.

Meanwhile, Peter Obi, who recently joined Labour Party candidate Dr. George Moghalu at a campaign rally, charged the INEC chairman to uphold the credibility of his office and ensure fairness for all candidates. Obi reminded Amupitan that his actions would affect not only the election’s result but also his personal legacy and his family’s reputation. Although Obi has announced his intention to run for president in 2027, he clarified that he remains a member of the Labour Party despite participating in the ADC coalition. He expressed concern about the tone of the campaign, urging candidates to focus on issues rather than personal attacks, and emphasized the need for a peaceful, issue‑based campaign. Obi encouraged voters to assess the candidates and vote according to their convictions.

The Anambra State governorship election is seen as a crucial test of Nigeria’s electoral process, with many hoping it will set a positive precedent for future elections. As the vote approaches, all eyes are on INEC and the candidates to ensure a free, fair, and credible outcome. The result will not only determine the next governor of Anambra State but also have broader implications for the country’s democratic process and the 2027 presidential election.
