Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, have called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure a free and transparent governorship election in Anambra State, scheduled for next Saturday. Atiku emphasized the importance of the election, stating that it presents an opportunity to end the era of poor governance in the state and prevent the ruling All Progressive Congress from manipulating the outcome.
Atiku urged voters to support the candidate of the African Democratic Congress, Nwosu Chima John and Nwobu Geoffrey Ndubisi, to lead the state to a new era of prosperity and economic stability. He also encouraged the electoral umpire, under the leadership of Professor Joash Amupitan, to prove its integrity and commitment to free and fair elections.
Meanwhile, Peter Obi, who recently joined the Labour Party’s candidate, Dr. George Moghalu, in a campaign rally, charged the INEC chairman to uphold the credibility of his office and ensure fairness for all candidates. Obi reminded Amupitan that his actions would impact not only the election’s outcome but also his personal legacy and the reputation of his family.
Obi, who has announced his intention to run for president in 2027, clarified that he remains a member of the Labour Party, despite being part of the ADC coalition. He expressed concern about the tone of the campaign, urging candidates to focus on issues rather than personal attacks. Obi emphasized the need for a peaceful and issue-based campaign, encouraging voters to assess the candidates and vote according to their convictions.
The Anambra State governorship election is seen as a crucial test of Nigeria’s electoral process, with many hoping that it will set a positive precedent for future elections. As the election approaches, all eyes are on the INEC and the candidates to ensure a free, fair, and credible outcome. The outcome of the election will not only determine the next governor of Anambra State but also have implications for the country’s democratic process and the 2027 presidential election.
