NIPOST Reform Urged Amid Worker Entitlements Issues

NIPOST gets new spokesperson as Franklin Alao retires

The Senior Staff Association of Statutory Corporations and Government Owned Companies (SSASCGOC) has called on the Federal Government to reassess its approach to reforming the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST). In a communique issued after its National Executive Council meeting in Akwa Ibom State, the association urged the government to allocate intervention funds to upgrade facilities, logistics, and technology, thereby enhancing operational efficiency and service delivery.

The association’s president, Kayode Alakija, and acting secretary, Akin Okudero, signed the communique, which emphasized the need for the government to settle outstanding wage awards, promotion arrears, and other entitlements owed to Nigerian workers. SSASCGOC also advocated for a review of the 50/50 revenue deduction policy introduced by the Federal Ministry of Finance, citing it as a significant obstacle to effective service delivery by government agencies.

To remain competitive in the digital age, the association stressed the importance of investing in cutting-edge technology to modernize postal operations and improve customer experience. Furthermore, SSASCGOC expressed deep concern over the worsening insecurity across the country, which it warned is crippling socio-economic activities. The association highlighted the need for strategic collaboration with government agencies to address issues relating to workers’ health, education, and housing.

The call for reform comes as the Nigerian Postal Service seeks to revamp its operations and remain relevant in an increasingly digital landscape. With the rise of digital communication, postal services worldwide are under pressure to adapt and innovate. In Nigeria, the postal service plays a critical role in connecting rural communities and facilitating economic activities.

By revisiting its approach to reforming NIPOST, the Federal Government can help ensure the postal service remains a vital component of the country’s infrastructure. This, in turn, can have a positive impact on the economy and the lives of Nigerian citizens. As the government considers the association’s recommendations, it is essential to prioritize the needs of workers, invest in modern technology, and address the pressing issue of insecurity. By doing so, Nigeria can work towards creating a more efficient, effective, and sustainable postal service that benefits the nation as a whole.
