In the heart of Nairobi’s impoverished Mukuru slum, a community arts collective is transforming lives through creativity. The Wajukuu Arts collective, founded in 2003 by teenagers seeking refuge from gang violence, has evolved into a vibrant community hub, offering alternatives to crime and providing a platform for social commentary.
Established during a period of escalating gang violence and police brutality, Wajukuu began as a survival initiative by over 40 teenage boys. The collective’s name, meaning “grandchildren,” reflects the founders’ desire to create a supportive community. Co-founder Lazarus Tumbuti notes that the community has many stories of women struggling to make ends meet, and his art reflects these daily realities.
Today, only four of the original founders remain, with some having left and others fallen victim to police violence. However, their vision continues through eight dedicated artists who use creativity as both personal therapy and social commentary. For Wajukuu’s artists, art serves as a means to process trauma and challenge systems that diminish human dignity. Co-founder Shabu Mwangi’s work explores identity, inequality, and the lasting impacts of colonialism.
The collective has expanded its reach, training 30 youth in practical skills like photography, videography, and web design. Its educational programs, including the Kids’ Club, provide a platform for children to express their feelings through drawing and storytelling, reaching 150 children annually. Wajukuu’s artists also create powerful works from discarded materials, such as Ngugi Waweru’s sculptures made from knives and iron sheets, transforming instruments of violence into meaningful art.
Wajukuu’s impact extends beyond the arts, providing a beacon of hope in one of Nairobi’s toughest neighborhoods. The collective’s work demonstrates that creativity can be a powerful tool against violence and despair. As a community hub, Wajukuu continues to nurture the next generation, offering a supportive environment where young people can cultivate ambition and support one another.
