Nnamdi Kanu's trial: Focus on facts, not propaganda - Lawyer tasks journalists

The Igbo Political Network (IPN) has joined other prominent Nigerians in calling for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Kanu remains in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) despite court orders demanding his release, a situation the IPN describes as unjust and a violation of his fundamental human rights.

IPN President Chief Alex Okemiri said the organization is no longer begging for Kanu’s freedom but demanding that he be allowed to go. He argued that Kanu’s continued detention is being viewed both nationally and internationally as a coordinated effort to frustrate his rights and as an open declaration that the Igbo people are being treated as second‑class citizens. Okemiri also criticized Igbo leaders and politicians for remaining silent, accusing them of acting against Kanu’s release for selfish interests.

Okemiri noted that prominent Nigerians, including Prof. Wole Soyinka and Omoyele Sowore, have called for Kanu’s release, citing a Kenyan court ruling that declared his detention and transfer from Kenya to Nigeria unlawful and illegal. The IPN has given those responsible for Kanu’s detention a seven‑day ultimatum to free him, warning that they will invoke the wrath of Amadioha, the Igbo god of thunder, if he is not released. The organization further warned that if Kanu is not freed by 31 November, Amadioha will strike down those who have failed to act.

The call for Kanu’s release comes amid reports of his deteriorating health while in DSS custody. The IPN’s demand marks a significant development in the ongoing debate over Kanu’s detention and the rights of the Igbo people. As the situation unfolds, it remains uncertain whether the Nigerian government will respond to the IPN’s demands. The international community is watching closely, with many urging Kanu’s release and an end to his persecution.
