Trump says he’ll skip G20 summit, calls for South Africa’s removal

U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he will not attend the upcoming G20 summit in Johannesburg, citing concerns over South Africa’s land‑reform policies. Speaking at the American Business Forum in Miami, Trump said the country no longer deserves its place among the world’s major economies.

The summit, scheduled for November 22‑23, will instead be attended by Vice President J.D. Vance. Trump’s decision follows his public criticism of South Africa’s land‑reform measures, which he claims target white farmers and result in human‑rights violations. Earlier this year, the president signed an executive order to cut aid to South Africa and to support the resettlement of white Afrikaners in the United States, describing them as victims of “unjust racial discrimination.”

South African officials have rejected Trump’s allegations, calling his statements “factually incorrect” and based on a distorted view of the country’s policies. The land‑reform program aims to address historic inequalities in land ownership and to promote greater economic equality and social justice, a topic that remains controversial both domestically and internationally.

Trump’s refusal to attend the G20 is likely to have significant implications for U.S.–South Africa relations and for the global economy. The summit serves as a key forum for international cooperation on major economic issues, and the absence of the U.S. president could affect its outcomes. As the event approaches, attention will focus on Vice President Vance, who will represent the United States. The summit is expected to address pressing global challenges, including economic growth, trade, and climate change, making U.S. participation crucial to the discussions.
