Nigerian President Bola Tinubu expressed confidence that the country will overcome its designation by the United States as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) and prevail over the violent crises affecting various regions. He made these remarks after a Federal Executive Council meeting that discussed the recent threat from U.S. President Donald Trump.

During the session, President Tinubu described Nigeria as a unified “family” and pledged that his administration will take every step necessary to eliminate terrorism and establish peace. He called for support from the international community, emphasizing that Nigeria needs assistance to intensify its fight against terrorism.

The U.S. designation of Nigeria as a CPC stemmed from concerns over the persecution of Christians. President Trump had threatened to sanction Nigeria and approve military operations if the alleged massacre of Christians did not cease. This followed months of campaigns by some Republican lawmakers urging U.S. sanctions against Nigeria for allowing such persecution.

Information Minister Mohammed Idris said the Nigerian government is responding to the genuine concerns raised by the United States and noted that channels have been opened for discussions between Nigerian and American officials on the controversy. The meeting marked the first formal discussion involving President Tinubu, his ministers, and senior aides to address the matter.

Tinubu’s administration has faced criticism from the United States over its handling of the security crisis, with accusations that it has not done enough to protect Christians from terrorist attacks. Nevertheless, the president assured that his government will defeat terrorism and overcome the CPC designation.

The Federal Executive Council meeting represents a significant step toward addressing U.S. concerns, and the Nigerian government’s response will be closely watched by the international community. As the situation develops, it remains to be seen how the United States and Nigeria will cooperate to resolve the country’s security challenges.
