A terrorism research consultant, Dr. Yahuza Getso, has outlined a strategy to combat terrorism in Nigeria, emphasizing the importance of releasing the list of financiers of criminal groups. In an interview on Arise Television, Getso stressed that making this list public would significantly contribute to ending insecurity in the country.
According to Getso, the Nigerian government has repeatedly promised to release the list of financiers, and he believes that doing so would enable the identification of these individuals and help resolve the issue within a matter of weeks, specifically between 17 to 32 days. He noted that the number of foreign terrorists involved is relatively small, particularly in the North-Central and Northeast regions of the country, where the majority of those involved are Nigerians.
Getso, who has conducted extensive research on the subject, including profiling by polling units, political wards, Local Governments, State Assemblies, National Assembly, and senatorial zones, suggested that some state governors have engaged in dialogue with these groups, but he questioned the effectiveness of such measures, citing the fact that these groups have not dropped their arms.
The consultant’s comments come as Nigeria continues to grapple with insecurity and terrorism, with various groups, including Boko Haram, operating in different parts of the country. Getso’s proposal to release the list of financiers is seen as a potential step towards addressing the root causes of terrorism and finding a lasting solution to the problem.
The Nigerian government’s response to Getso’s suggestion remains to be seen, but his comments have highlighted the need for a comprehensive approach to tackling terrorism, including addressing the financial networks that support these groups. As the country seeks to find a way out of the current insecurity, the release of the list of financiers could be a crucial step towards achieving this goal.
