The Taraba State government has taken a significant step towards advancing its sugar development initiatives with the establishment of a 23-member Joint Technical Committee. Governor Dr Agbu Kefas approved the committee, which is tasked with promoting the growth of the sugar industry across the state.

Chaired by Jethro Yakubu Zikyengyu, the committee comprises representatives from key government agencies, the private sector, farmers’ associations, community leaders, and traditional rulers. Abel Bako Joachim from the Ministry of Agriculture will serve as Secretary. The committee’s mandate includes formulating a comprehensive sugar development plan, identifying suitable locations for sugar processing, and mobilizing funding, equipment, and technical expertise to enhance sugar production.

The committee’s activities will be coordinated by the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Dr Jeji Williams, and it has a three-month timeline to submit its report and recommendations to the state government. Governor Kefas noted that the move reflects his administration’s commitment to agricultural transformation, job creation, and the promotion of industrial growth across Taraba State.

The establishment of the committee is a crucial step towards unlocking the potential of the sugar industry in Taraba State. With its rich agricultural resources, the state is well-positioned to become a major player in the sugar industry. The committee’s work will focus on engaging stakeholders across relevant sectors, including farmers, processors, and investors, to create a conducive environment for sugar production and processing.

The governor’s administration has prioritized agricultural development as a key driver of economic growth and job creation. The sugar industry is seen as a critical sector that can contribute significantly to the state’s economy. With the committee’s report and recommendations, the state government aims to create a roadmap for the development of the sugar industry, including the establishment of sugar processing facilities, irrigation systems, and other infrastructure.

The move is expected to have a positive impact on the state’s economy, creating jobs and income opportunities for farmers, processors, and other stakeholders. As the committee begins its work, the state government is confident that the sugar industry will play a significant role in driving economic growth and development in Taraba State.
