The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested at least three individuals suspected of vote‑buying during the Anambra State governorship election. The arrests took place on Saturday, 8 November 2025, while voting was still underway, and the suspects were taken into custody at different locations across the state. According to the EFCC, Emeka Ilokasia was arrested in Ward 2 of Njikoka Local Government Area, Nwachuwu Loretta was apprehended in Ward 2 (008), Awkuzu, Oyi Local Government Area, and Emuka Chuwudi was seized in Umunachi village, Dukonukofia Local Government Area. The agency announced the arrests on its official Facebook page and indicated that the suspects will be charged in court once investigations are completed.
The EFCC’s swift action forms part of its broader mandate to combat financial crimes in Nigeria, including electoral malpractices such as vote‑buying. By targeting these offenses, the anti‑graft agency aims to protect the integrity of the electoral system and ensure that the will of the people is reflected in the election outcome. The Anambra State governorship election is a significant event on Nigeria’s political calendar, attracting close scrutiny from local and international observers who are monitoring the process for credibility and transparency.
As the investigation into the alleged vote‑buying continues, the EFCC is expected to provide updates on the case and any subsequent actions against the suspects. Its efforts to tackle financial crimes and electoral misconduct are crucial for promoting good governance and accountability in Nigeria’s democratic process.
