Imported expired maize, rice flooding Nigerian market - Babachir Lawal knocks Tinubu govt

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation Babachir Lawal has claimed that the recent Anambra State governorship election was rigged. In an interview with Channels Television’s *Politics Today*, monitored by Media Talk Africa, Lawal said, “structures are used to rig elections; structures are used to defend votes at the polling units.” His comments came after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared incumbent governor Chukwuma Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance the winner.

Lawal’s remarks attracted attention because of his affiliation with the All Progressives Congress. When asked about possible rigging during the party’s victories in the 2015 and 2023 general elections, he suggested that while some individuals might have been involved, his own involvement was with a candidate who opposed such practices. He referenced President Buhari’s stance on respecting Nigerian voters and their Permanent Voter Cards.

The Anambra governorship race was closely watched, and Soludo’s victory was seen as a significant outcome for the region. Lawal’s allegations highlight ongoing concerns about the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process. The INEC declaration of Soludo as winner has elicited mixed reactions, with some questioning the legitimacy of the result.

These comments add to the complex landscape of Nigerian politics, where accusations of electoral malfeasance are common. The situation underscores the importance of robust electoral institutions and the need for all stakeholders to uphold the principles of free and fair elections. As Nigeria continues its democratic development, addressing such concerns will be crucial for strengthening its democratic foundations and ensuring the credibility of future elections, both domestically and internationally.
