The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) has launched the second phase of its free prepaid‑meter distribution under the Metre Acquisition Fund (MAF) program, known as “Tranche B.” Established by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), the program seeks to close the sector’s metering gap and eliminate estimated billing. Funded by the Metre Acquisition Fund, the meters are provided at no cost to customers, who are not required to pay for installation.

Phase 2 began on 2 November 2025 with a Know Your Customer (KYC) validation exercise and will benefit 13,335 EEDC customers, including those of its subsidiary companies. According to Emeka Ezeh, Group Head of Corporate Communications at EEDC, the initiative prioritises customers on Band “A” feeders in the South‑East region. He advises customers to verify and update their contact details by visiting the Customer Service Unit at their local distribution office.

Ezeh highlighted that the programme aims to improve service transparency and customer satisfaction. He noted that EEDC previously completed “Tranche A,” successfully metering 13,614 Band “A” customers. The company now intends to systematically close the remaining metering gap across the network, shifting focus to Band “B” customers once all Band “A” customers are covered.

NERC has recently approved a N28 billion bailout for the second phase of the MAF programme. Ezeh warned against bypassing the prepaid meters, stressing that such actions would undermine efforts to enhance efficiency and protect revenue. Customers are encouraged to report any instances of meter bypass, energy theft, or other illegal activities.

The rollout of free prepaid meters represents a significant step toward greater efficiency and transparency in Nigeria’s electricity distribution sector, and it is expected to boost both customer satisfaction and revenue collection for distribution companies as the programme progresses.
