A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) loyal to Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has advised its members nationwide to boycott the planned national convention in Ibadan, Oyo State. The faction claims that a recent court order has invalidated the process, casting uncertainty over the event.
The warning comes on the heels of a lawsuit filed by former Jigawa State governor Sule Lamido, which resulted in a court pronouncement that the Wike bloc believes has introduced fresh legal uncertainty over the convention. According to Timothy Osadolor, the Acting National Youth Leader of the faction, the party cannot proceed with the Ibadan gathering until its internal disputes are resolved and stakeholders agree on the next steps.
Osadolor stated that the ruling secured earlier in the week further discredits the event, rendering it without legal or organizational foundation. He urged party members to refrain from traveling or spending money to attend the convention, likening it to an “early Christmas party” that is not properly constituted or organized.
The development is the latest twist in the ongoing internal conflicts within the PDP, which has been plagued by power struggles and factionalization. The party has been working to resolve its internal disputes and prepare for upcoming elections, but the recent court order and the Wike faction’s boycott threat have raised concerns about the party’s ability to move forward.
The PDP national convention is a crucial event that is expected to bring together party leaders and stakeholders to discuss key issues and chart a course for the future. However, with the Wike faction’s boycott and the legal uncertainty surrounding the event, it remains to be seen whether the convention will proceed as planned. The party’s leadership will need to navigate the current challenges and find a way to resolve its internal disputes in order to move forward and prepare for the upcoming elections.
